ROLF........I think this would be on-thread, tangential, as the great one would say....I need more patio space for the new Weber, and she says lets do an expansion as Rolf did with those stones ! I say, OK let er rip....but, What kind of base did you put down and would you do anything differently ....eg. a partial roof for cover? Thanks,DAVE </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
Sorry I took so long getting back to you David. That area is very recent, compliments of my youngest son. Up until last fall, I had the lawn and that was it. That was fine for the Performer but later I added a OTG and the 18” WSM. I came home one day and there was a 16’ X 15’ hole in the back yard. My son looked at me and said there’s no turning back now dad. He dug down between 11” and 12”. Then he put down a black poly “carpet” to keep out any future grass or weeds. Next was 7” to 9” of crushed stone followed by two inches of screened sand. Following that, the pavers. He went extra deep because he didn’t want anything to shift in the winter. I suggest you do the same, (I’ve spent some time in Rochester). During this smoke, he planted some basil, peppermint, peppers, rosemary, tarragon and some other things along the one side. As to what I would do different, I really can’t think of anything. As you say, a partial roof would be nice but frankly we cook outside all year and we never had a problem. Yes, get the free standing fireplace, it helps and was $89.00 at Home Depot. Your question is timely as I was thinking I would like to take some photos and “brag” a little about my son’s gift to me. Hopefully in the near future. Thanks for asking!
