Blue is my favorite color

IMO, These spots could be improved.

And a practical question: how much heat do these things give off behind them? I was planning to place it kind of against or near my fence which has string lights on it and whatnot

I would say keep it about 4" away. Unless you have a huge grease fire, there isn't likely to be much of a chance of it catching fire even if it was closer, but if you cook on it for a long time and it is closer, you might find it affecting the railing with smoke and carbon.

I know growing up my dad had a permanent mounted NG grill that was probably two inches away from the railing behind it. It was there for 15 years before the deck was replaced, but it did discolor the railing pretty good. Never any worries about it catching the deck on fire though.

weber manual states no combustible material within 24 inches of the top, side, back etc. There's a chance I've had mine closer to a fence than 24 inches.

My old neighbor used to keeps his just far enough away from the house to open the lid..... I always told him that was too damn close --- he wasn't one to clean his grill that often and I knew he was one grease fire from lighting his house up. Scorching and grease stains at the very least.

Is it common for the right side to be a little more "hot"? Or is that a result of those orange tips on the burner? Or just a quirk of these models?
No odds are the orange tips are gone once the bottom grease tray is on it and the lid is down, but it's like looking inside the fridge to see if the light actually goes out :D Those are very common to run a bit hotter to the right or upper right corner
