has anyone had any experience with not being able to close lid doing beer can chicken? I have a 18.5 OTS the bird was about 5 pounds. charcoal set ready to go, chicken on grill, what ? lid wont go back on. had to fire up the gas weber which did a great job, but Iam sure i missed out on some flavor

Eric, the asnwer is yes! LOL I have a 22" OTS,and the only time I've ever had trouble doing BCC is when I tried using one of those can stands. The lid hit the chicken. I quickly removed the beer from the stand, and it fit beautifly! I now do more spatch-cocked chicken,so lid height isn't a factor.

Shawn, Phil Thanks for the reply. my 22.5 is on order. the chicken is most excellent out of the gas Weber, just surprised that it wouldn't fit on the kettle. thought mine was manufactured wrong. lol Hope you both have a wonderful 4th.

Take out the cooking grate & place an aluminum foil pan in the middle on the charcoal grate and prop the beer can chicken in there. Put some charcoal on either side of the pan on the grate and off you go. Works great, good luck.

Well Eric if you search around you will find a couple of methods to solve your problem. HEREis one of them. Or you can do the Fire Brick Method just take the top grate off and put your bird down on the bottom grate.

Hope this solves your problem.

Eric, I had the same problem with a 4 pound chicken. However I have a rotisserie, so I used my rotisserie ring to raise the space between the chicken and the lid, worked great. I did use the beer can chicken holder with that setup on the regular grill.

Eric the easiest way to do BCC in a kettle is to remove the top grate and set the chickens on the charcoal grate, use a charcoal basket to hold the coals and cover the front part of the basket with HD foil, better luck next time.
