Is crab apple wood any good to use?

I`m trying to gather up some wood for smoking. I`m tired of spending 10 bucks a bag of a few chunks. Is crab apple the same as the bags of apple I pay way to much for?
 
Well, I've never used it but doing a quick Google search shows there should be no problem.

Crabapple and Apple are in the same genus Malus of the Rosaceae family.

Generally, all fruit woods are good for smoking.

The only woods to absolutely avoid for smoking are Evergreens and green Mesquite.
