Is a Rub Neccessary?

Hey folks..

My family and I like our ribs with a nice sauce, and dont care much for anything else. Is a rub necessary for the cook then? All the flavours I want can be achieved by a sauce anyways. Was just wondering if it served any other purpose.

Good question, Dave. I have always (best I recall) used some kind of rub, but possibly some worcestershire rubbed back and front and salt and pepper sprinkled on to suit your taste might be interesting to try. If you don't like worcestershire I suppose you could substitute something else to help hold the moisture in and the salt and pepper on.

NO, it's not necessary and how you season your BBQ should be based on your tastes. Salt and pepper are sufficient for seasoning and I'd suggest it as a minimum seasoning.

It's all a matter of preference. One could also ask, 'is a sauce necessary?' To me, a rub is required, a sauce is not. Your preferences determine what's necessary to you.

I've BBQ'd ribs with just a little salt and pepper and they were great. I would think that the flavor from just charcoal and no rub would still make great tasting ribs.
