In Search Of Burnt Ends

Pammi and I just got back from a family reunion in St. Louis. We took the long way, going to west Arkansas to see her momma, then up to western Missouri to see a family friend that is due with their second child. I told Pammi that if we were going to be THAT close to KC,then we needed to find some burnt ends! :)
Our first barbeque stop was in Hot Springs,Arkansas. We went to Bill Clinton's favorite joint,McClard's. No brisket, but they had sliced beef and it was pretty durn good! Covered with their pretty tangy sauce,it was served with beans and cole slaw. I'm not sure what cut of beef it was,but it was very tender and good!

I also got a bottle of sauce and a jar of rub for when we got home!
Next stop was in Columbia,Missouri at a place called Smoking Chicks BBQ. Pammi had called and asked if they had burnt ends all the time. The response was yes. Needless to say,we were a little disappointed.:( We got cubed brisket. Some of the pieces didn't even have bark on them! Mine was served with beans and chips. Tasty, but not the burnt ends we were hoping for!

We spent one day at Ulysses S. Grant's old farm that is now associated with Anhueser Busch. I forget how. But we went to a deli that is not far from my sister's place. Imagine my surprise when I saw this!

All imports and craft brews! Yeah,I dropped a pretty penny there! That's my niece from Maine in the pic. She took a couple 12ers home with her!
After the farm and wall o beer, everyone was going to a free jazz concert. I'm not a big jazz guy and Pammi was still looking for the burnt ends,so after a quick internet search, she,my dad and I went to BBQ ASAP. They were the only hit I got when searching for burnt ends in St. Louis. We ordered and we were served this.

Braised point cubes. Much better than what we had in Columbia, but still not what we were looking for. And the beans had shreds of brisket in it. Very nice! We talked to the owner/pit master, and told her what we were looking for. She said she didn't know of anywhere in St. Louis that we could find that. I guess I'm gonna have to put the WSM to work and learn how to make 'em myself!
More of our road trip and more cooks later! Thanks for looking!

The Busch mansion is on that property. Grants Farm was really elsewhere but they purchased the cabin and put it there. The front gate and along the Gravois side of the farm is all musket barrels from the civil war.

Not a fan of BBQ ASAP over priced for what you get. There are other burnt ends places in the area but ASAP is the only one that serves them on a regular menu.

Beer in ST. Louis? nah not possible.:D

Sorry to hear you had a hard time finding a place that sold burnt ends. I myself havn't found a bbq place yet that served burnt ends.

Great post Phil. Life is a journey and we're all on it together!! Too bad the burnt ends were no where to be found. The journey goes on.....

Looks grand...Did you pick off a (6) pack Newcastle brown on your way out?? Not the same of a bottle then from a keg...But stil AWESOME!

Thanks everyone! We had a blast!
@Daniel,all the brews I bought were of a local/Missouri origin. They did have Newcastle, along with Smithwick's,Hof Brau Haus and several other imports. Although I have to say,I much prefer Newcastle on draught!
