I Love Rancher Charcoal

Steve Whiting

TVWBB All-Star
I cooked a Brisket in my BDS yesterday and it turned out great. But what I want to post about is the performance I got from the Rancher (TJ) charcoal I used. I filled the BDS charcoal basket up with approximately 12 lbs of Rancher briqs and fired her up with a Minion method of sorts. I used my weed burner and lit only the top fews briqs. I reached 225-250 and there she stayed. This was at 8:00am and at 9:30 PM, a couple hours after my Brisket came off, the BDS was still sitting at 225. Thats over 13 hours after I fired her up and who knows how long after I called it a night that the coals still burned.

+1 on Rancher. With the recent price increase of K, it's actually on par pricewise.

But, being curious, will probably give the new K a try, and have yet to open the K-comp recently gotten with coupon.

Couldn't agree with you more. By far my favorite briquette. Did a 26 hour cook the other day on about 7 lbs of the stuff and had some unlit left over when I shut her down. I'm out and hoping someone will have a Memorial Day sale on it.

i've wanted to try rancher as i hear good things about it. but locally i can get 40 pounds of hardwood lump for $15. hard to beat that price. I find lump lasts about 50% longer than charcoal of the same weight

John: where are you finding 40# lump for $15? If it's in the SJ area, I'd like to try it out. If it's at a place that sells only to business licenses, that won't work for me.

you can get 40 pounds of lazzaris mesquite lump at cash and carry in san jose on san carlos and leigh right by valley fair. they also have kick *** prices on meat. it's a whole sale restuarant store that looks a lot like costco. i get all my meats there.

you can also get the oak lump at the lazzaris HQ in san fran right across 101 from candlestick park. they also sell smoke wood chuncks that are priced fair. here is a link to their website.

If I had to guess I'd bet it's Lazzari up near San Francisco. I need to make a run up there myself.

EDIT: Posted your answer while I was posting mine. It's good stuff.

your right Larry, good guess

last time i went last fall i bought 6 bags of the oak lump. great stuff. the 6 should last me all summer. and at $17 per bag its a bargain. really like the oak over the mesquite. the mesquite is great for grilling.

the place looks like a war zone. if you have never been and live in the bay area its worth a trip just to see the place.
