When I rebuilt my Performer in the spring of 2010 I ordered a brand new bowl and lid. Take a look at what I found today while cleaning up the patio.

Looks like heat damage maybe? I thought it might be from the lid but it never touches that area.
BTW this is the side I usually bank the coals towards.

Wow! Those are really odd looking cracks. I hope you can get a replacement. I heard a guy in another thread saying they made him choose between blue black and green because they didn't have the brick red anymore.

Just got off the phone with Weber. You are right Shaun, they no longer make brick red. But, this may be the reason they do not. They are kind enough to send me basic black, both bowl and lid. It is still nice to know they have outstanding customer service.

I agree with Troy.... Seems like they should have given you the choice of color.

I have the same cracks/peeling on an '05 Performer I bought used. However it's on the opposite side, where the igniter enters the bowl - and it was most definitely caused by excessive heat (coal bin is melted too). Didn't find it till after I bought it, but it cooks the same regardless.

Now that Weber's sending you a replacement, you could just continue cook on it indefinitely as is, saving the extras for another project, or just replace if/when the bottom finally gives in.

Weber did give me the choice of color. I went with basic black. Red is no longer an option.
I will be keeping my high heat cooks in the center of the grill and see if that makes a difference.

I have a 1999 model black Bar-B-Kettle that I've banked coals on for at least 3 years - you're probably talking 50+ high heat, direct contact cooks - with temps I know exceeding 600 degrees many times. Bowl still looks like it did the day I bought it home.

I guess it could be that the finish of the colored bowls isn't up to the same quality as the black ones.

Tim;

I am at work and can not bring up these pictures so where is this damage lid or bowl? if it is the bowl what are doing with the Lid? I could use a red lid. Mine is damaged from wind blow off, that is what the guy told I got it from.
Kevin

I have an 06 Black OTG. I have the same crazing/cracks on the side I bank the coals.Hard to notice on a black one compared to a red one.

Edit to add pics.
Those were from last yr, never noticed em before till I buffed up the lid and bowl w/ 409 and steel-wool.

i've had my blue kettle well over 1000 degrees on several occassions.

it has nothing to do with color.

timothy, thanks for posting your pictures.

Troy, what year is your blue one?

I bank the coals toward the bail side (opposite the gas ignition) for high heat searing of steaks and chops. I bank off to both sides for indirect cooks such as chicken and have no problems there.

First photo below is the inside of the brick red bowl. It shows no cracks, crazing or peels like the same location outside.

Second photo is the outside of my 1998 Performer. I have done high heat on it too and it does not show these cracks/crazing.

I guess I should update this.

The replacement bowl and lid arrived on the 16th. 2 days from when I called. They are now aging in my garage awaiting installation.

The saga continues. I finally got around to opening the boxes for the new bowl and lid today.
Check out this big blob I found on the inside of the bowl. I am worried about it affecting operation of the ash sweeper. Weber has been called and they want pictures of both bowls now. I have already sent them the email with pics and am awaiting a call back.

WOW!!! Not cool!! On the red paint...i'm guessing thats why Weber discontinued that color so quickly?
