How much pork for a party of 40?

I've been asked by some friends to cater a party for them for 40 people. They want me to do pulled pork and beans. How many pounds of pork should I get for 40 people? Thank you

With lots of sides i always went with at least a 1/4 lb. per person.

Hey Vic,

Here is a like Chris put together. At the bottom are estimates on yield. So using his numbers, 20lbs uncooked, yeild 10lbs, equals 40 4oz sandwiches. So i am guessing that would be the least amount to get.

Three 8 lb butts will cover it. Four if you want larger sandwiches or leftovers.

Kinda a rule of thumb - case of 8 butts for 100 people. Then it is a matter of division to figure smaller groups. Err on the plus side for leftovers.

I did 4 8-9 lb'ers and fed about 50 hungry fishermen last summer. There was a small amount left.

I cooked four 7 pounders for a party of almost 30 a few months ago. We had lots of leftovers. (That was somewhat on purpose). Might be about right for you.
