I've got two 22.5 Kettles going. One low and slow for smoking, the other hot and fast for grilling.

It's 6p and I've been going since about 8a this morning. I've done two pastamis, 13lbs of country ribs and 6 racks of baby backs on the "smoker" and 4 ribeyes, 6 NY strips, 20 hot dobs, 30 brats, 20 boneless chicken breasts and 30 zucchini on the "grill".

I've gone through about a bag and a half of Kingsford blue and 1/4 bag of Stubbs. Is that normal? It seems a little high for me....

I only refresh with pre-lit coals; I don't use "the Monion Method" as I swear I can taste when unlit coals are used.

Yeah, that sounds right to me as well the way you're doing it. I can taste the unlit coals when using Kingsford also. I tried to convince myself I can't, but I can. Not with Stubbs, though. Do a straight Stubbs minion and see if you can taste it.

Sounds reasonable. I would suggest a WSM for the low and slow, it will use far less fuel and be much easier to control.

You might want to try to get your hands on some Wicked Good Briqs, I read a review on them and they don't have the borax that Kingsford uses, so they don't have the "taste" you are talking about when burned using the minion method. They also produce significantly less ash. I used 60 Briqs of the wicked good for a 6 hour burn using the minion method on mothers day and the results were exactly as described in the link below. I'm pretty sure I had another hours worth of fuel left at the 6 hour mark and the temps were dead on during the cook. I'm not affiliated with the company in any way, but I highly recommend this stuff.

Jon D. - I actually prefer Stubbs, but Lowe's was out when I went on Saturday and it was hard to pass up the deal(s) on Kingsford.

Stuart S. - I LOVE your signature. I'll see if I can find the Wicked Good lump and give it a try as I've heard nothing but good things about it.

Also, as I read the list of everything I cooked and looked at my fridge full of foil pans, perhaps my coal usage was perfectly reasonable.

Sean, I would have said that you cheaped out on the charcoal!

Kidding... that's a lot of food for a day's cook! I'm sure it was fun though.
