How many butts for 30+ people?

I am having a party for 30 adults and 6 children this weekend, and need to know how many butts I should smoke. I was thinking 3 7-8lb butts. Any suggestions?

Dan, that is how many I would cook for that size crowd. It may even allow you a few leftovers!

In a mixed crowd, typical consumption is an average of 1/4 to 1/2 pound per person. Split the difference and call it 1/3 pound each. Your net yield from a pork butt will be 50-60% of the uncooked weight. You would need about 25 pounds uncooked, minimum. I'd cook four average 7-8 pounders. If you're buying them in cryovac, that's the fewest you could purchase and be sure you had enough. If you have a vacuum sealer, nothing will go to waste, or you can send some home with guests.

Also with kids you never know what they'll eat, so you might consider picking up some sausage for them. I know the adults would never nibble on sausage

I agree also. 25 lbs. of uncooked raw meat will provide about 12 - 14 lbs. of meat to eat, which is plenty for your crowd with some leftovers maybe. I would throw a fattie on as well to snack on before the meal, they always go over well with a crowd. Hot dogs etc. for the kids can go on after you pull the butts.

Doug recommended the 25 lbs uncooked. I guess depending on the size of yhour butts, 4 on the smaller or 3 if they are larger.
