A MAPP torch is hotter than the blue propane bottle. See this chart for a comparison of the 4 most popular gases.
I use a MAPP torch with the 2' hose to lite the lump in my SJOTG away from home. Like this photo.

When at home I just use the igniter in a Performer to light a chimney of lump for the Performer or smoker.
