Hello! My name is Doug Wiles

I am a long time lurker, but I have never done a forum before (be gentle). I have always loved to grill and cook for my family and friends. I started out with a cheap gas grill a few years ago, then my parents bought me a Char-Broil InferRed two burner gas grill for my wife and I. It is a great little grill, but it cooks hot and fast. It is great for burgers or dogs but anything else and there is no chance to control the heat. I have always had a fascination with low and slow, traditional barbecue. This led me to start watching videos on YouTube and trying to learn everything I could about the craft of low and slow barbecue. The first charcoal grill I bought was Weber One Touch Gold, I made a promise to myself that I would not upgrade to a bigger smoker until I could master the art of barbecue on my kettle grill. It took me about two and a half years to feel like I had gained enough knowledge to expand my family of grills and smokers. This last June (2016) for my birthday I bought myself the smoker that I had dreamed of owning from the first time I fill my charcoal chimney. I bought the Weber Smokey Mountain 22.5" (Go Big or Go Home!), and the learning curve starts all over again. Thank you for letting me be a part of the group and I hope to one day be able to pass on some of my gained knowledge with you. :blackkettle::wsm22:

Welcome to the forum Doug and congrats on that WSM22. You will love it and you and your family and friends will love the Q that comes off of it. Everyone here is very friendly and are glad to help others. Don't forget that the questions you ask are probably some of the same questions that others have so you are not only helping yourself but others as well. Don't forget to post pics of your progress. We love pics here.

Welcome Doug! I am at the opposite end with the 14.5" WSM, but it is the perfect size to take along camping or just about anywhere.
Enjoy your new 22!

How much does the 14.5" hold? Are you able to get full racks of ribs on there or do you have to split the racks? The portability would be nice, the 22 is a beast to move and set up, but it holds a ton of food.

Welcome Doug, congrats on the WSM22. Yes it is big but if you are going to cook a lot you do have the room now. Looking forward to seeing some cooks and don't forget the pics. Have fun that's what cooking is all about.;)

Welcome to the forum Doug. There are a lot of knowledgeable and helpful people on this forum. I have learned so much in the 6 months that I have been back on the charcoal.

Welcome Doug from Mattoon!
Please feel free to pass along any thing you learn because we all gain from that.:wsm:

Welcome to the forum, Doug! You'll get a ton of use and enjoyment out of that 22.5. I have had an 18.5 for a couple years and I love it.

Regarding the 14.5, I just bought one on clearance a little over a week ago. Depending on the size of the ribs, if you roll them you could get four racks. I easily had two small racks the other day. I'm thinking that if I cut the ribs in half and used a wire rib rack, I could definitely fit three or four.

It wouldn't surprise me is somebody around here found an inventive way to fit some crazy amount like 6 or 7 racks on the 14.5.
