Hi guys, I am new to the board

I just got a WSM after cooking on a small green egg for years. I love it. So far I have cooked a fresh ham, whole turkey (both high heat), and two boston butts (18 hour cook starting Christmas Eve). I love the WSM. I used Kingsford lump on all cooks and it seems to burn real fast. I think I will try the BGE lump next. I really appreciate all the good advice on this site.

Welcome aboard Chad and Merry Christmas/Happy New Years!

There is a great deal of interesting and good natured discussion regarding charcoal on this site.
Certainly, Rancher Hardwood briquettes made by the Original Charcoal Company has been the hottest topic since early this past summer. Go here to see a list of discussions regarding this charcoal. I have used it and it is very long burning. For shorter cooks, I use Royal Oak Lump.

Again, welcome aboard and I look forward to seeing your posts in the future!

Welcome Chad
There are a lots of pros on the board (i am certainly not one of them) but have learned a lot from some good folks. Just hope The Original Charcoal company brings back the Rancher charcoal at some stores.

welcome and i too think the kingsford lump burns up way too fast. just an FYI if you didn't know, BGE lump is made by royal oak and you can get RO lump for almost half the price of BGE lump(at least around here). i have tried the BGE lump and can't tell a difference from the RO lump i get at walmart.

Chad, perhaps after you have used the WSM for a while you will be kind enough to give us a comparison of the pluses and minuses of both
the SGE and WSM.

Chad the kingsford lump is imported from south america and seems to spark more than the royal oak lump...the royal oak lump made for BGE is Missouri hardwood

Also Wegman's lump is made by Royal Oak, if you have any Wegman's near you.

I have to echo the comments about the kingsford lump, I don't like it because it breaks into lots of little bits and sparks. Does anyone know where Barbecues galore gets their lump? I've tried it, and I might buy it again if I can find it cheaper. Some of the lumps are so big that I have to break them apart with a hoe, hammer or other handy tool. Otherwise I'll buy the Cowboy/Whole foods brand when I buy lump- it burns fast but it's less of a hassle than the other two.
