I just talked to Eric Krause from Original Charcoal Company. Here is what was said about the product and how we can get it into the stores again.

Home Depot wasn't going to carry the Original product because Kingsford bundled their Clorox and cooking products and basically undercut Original by not charging HD until this year. Also the outpouring of support for Original directed at HD was not well received. Eric has responses from HD senior Management stating that the support was coerced. I cry BS I support the product because it is great.

To show support please send Eric an email to: info@originalcharcoal.com
explain why you want to see the product in stores in your area. Tell them your successes and give them a contact so the muckity mucks can't dispute the validity of your opinion or support. Original is meeting with the following Big Box stores to get the product carried again. Lowes, Walmart, HD along with some others.

Now for those of you that want Original Charcoal products.

In the Midwest- MN, MI, IL, KCK, KCMO, Neb, OH, MO, Ind

All Costco's in these states will have Original Charcoal Lump in both the recycled paper bags and the newer packaging. This is the same product just old and new packaging.

In Texas, you lucky....., All 18 Costco's will be carrying Original Charcoal Ranchers Briquettes until they are sold out. This will be starting May 8th. It is roughly 3 weeks away. AGAIN THIS IS UNTIL IT IS GONE.

You can also buy all the products in NC, if you live in or near there.

He can also ship pallets of the items to distributors but it will be in the price range of $9.00 a bag x the number of bags on a pallet.

Talk to your local BBQ supply stores or Big Box stores and get the word out we want Original Products.

Sorry for the long winded email but hope this helps in the quest to find Original Charcoal products

He didn't say anything about the west coast, but he will return both emails and phone calls. That would be the best bet. Sorry I don't have that info.

I sent a letter out this morning, but if there are lots of us doing so, I don't expect an answer right away. I know that Larry R and I both are down to our last bags. I think Larry R has about 25 bags left and I only have about 16 bags left. Could be a very long summer, if we don't find a suitable replacement.

Put one more letter in the hopper.

Sysco distributes an all hardwood briquet made by RO called Chef Select..its only sold through food distributors and mainly to up scale restaurants..it is in my opinion superior to the rancher briquet that was sold last summer

Eric finally got back to me today.

In Florida the only options are getting some from a Florida BBQ Assoc. member who has bought some in bulk, or buy a pallett (60 bags) yourself.

Any other central Floridians interested in going in on a pallet?

They are selling this product at Costco in Illinois (at least at the one in Niles, IL). It was tucked away in the corner between the Kingsford charcoal and the (eep) lighter fluid. I bought 6 bags and am looking forward to trying it out after reading about it here.

Joe, he will respond. It seems that HD has given the Charcoal biz to Kingsford this year, but is back up for bid next year. Eric is asking all of us to ask our local stores to help in this matter. Larry R and I are buying a pallet and I have a trucking company that I am lining up to bring it out to me.

Chris A.-I sent you an email about this, I hope you have received it. If not let me know and I'll re-send it to you.

i thought it was supposed to be in costco in april; and now it is not gonna happen here in cali? oh well. i have 24 bags of the briquettes left and it was a great deal at the home depot price. if it goes up to other manufacturer's prices, is it still good? kingsford is like $14 for 42 lbs.

i wish that the fresno area had better options/choices with charcoal, but this is based on reviews on the naked whiz. is original charcoal better/the best for bbq'n and/or grillin'? i was using kingsford for grilin' and original for smokin'. i was gonna try something different for grillin', but what?

reardon, get ahold of ed cardoza. hes getting some rancher. also you got bbq galore. check the
local food stores. food4less sometimes carries duraflame briquettes and best of the west. wally worlds sometimes carry ro lump. winco carries ro briquettes.

I'll start by saying that Ranchers is the best briquette I have ever used and I'm mad that no one is carrying it in MO this year.

Now for the part I hate to say: I was the first one to buy OCC Lump from my local Costco. I raced home, filled up the wsm and fired up a chimney for some ribs. I have never experienced so much popping from lump charcoal before and I have used several different brands. I could barely get close enough to the chimney to dump it into the cooker. The popping decreased once I got the wsm put together but every time I opened the lid the popping started up and ash flew everywhere. I was disappointed if not heart broken. The temps held for about 2 hours and then spiked to almost 300 degrees after some vent adjustment they were all over the place. The ribs came out ok and the lump did have a pleasant smell but the popping and ash have totally turned me off. I think I'm going to sell my 2nd bag at my yard sale this weekend with a warning of course.

COSTCO in Madision Heights, MI has the lump at $8.89 for 2 - 10 lb bags. Just picked up some to try out. Question - should I go back and get a bunch more??? Is this as good as Rancher??? I have little experience with lump due to unavailability at reasonable prices (read cheap prices). COSTCO also has K at $13+ for 2 21.7 lb bags...good deal on this I think.
