can i retro fit the heat plate that comes on the new 18 wsm to my old wsm? is the charcoal bowl or legs different? thinking about ordering one from weber if it would fit. Just got a new stamped patio poured and am a bit concerned about the heat. thanks
 
There are tabs on the legs of the new WSM that hold the heat shield in place. You would either need to order a new set of legs along with the heat shield or mount some hooks on the existing legs to hold the shield.

thanks chris.. do you know if its the same size shield that is on the kettles? think my lowes has them if it is.
 
Yes, I think they are repurposed from the kettle, except with some slots punched into the edge that attach the heat shield to the legs.
