GURU Jacket Users!...???????

I got one for Christmas, and plan on using it for the first time tomorrow. Looking it over, a couple questions came to mind.

1. It only has one little vent hole on the top. Is that really enough? I know it's a power draft system, but.......

2. There's no provision to view a lid thermometer. Do you all trust and rely on the temp probe from the GURU?

Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this, but it didn't seem to exactly fit any of them!

Oh, another question! Has anyone ever "modified" their jacket?

Thanks,

JimT

Thanks Bryan!

Just noticed I was the last poster in that thread too. I'd forgotten I did that.

Jim, If you used your Guru before and know that it's accurate then no worries. I'd be a little concerned if it was the first use for the Guru and putting the jacket on also. I know and trust my Guru 4+ years now, so that's why I don't worry about not being able to see the lid thermo. HTH

Full speed ahead!!!

I've had the GURU for a couple of years, and although I normally don't use it, I know it well enough to trust it.

Two brisket flats will get cooked tomorrow afternoon. The weather forecast is for falling temps and increasing winds (temps to the teens, gusts to 40 mph.) Sounds like the perfect opportunity for the jacket's maiden voyage!

Thanks,

JimT

Hey Brian!

Are we the only two people that use this thing? LOL

Anyway, the cook was a no brainer. The jacket did it's thing, and did it wonderfully! Like you, I had a fair amount of smoke coming down the sides and out the bottom. I guess that little grommet they put in the top is not enough! That smoke, though, brings up some more questions.

What a mess!! As the smoke makes it way out the confines of the jacket, the moisture condenses and now I have this wet, gooey, sticky, smelly mess all over the outside of the WSM and the inside of the jacket. I stored the jacket in the garage overnight, but this morning I couldn't stand the smell, so it got sent to the shed!

How do you cope with that?

Also, I noticed that some of the condensation was dripping on to the wires, and heading right toward the control unit. Easy to take care of, but worth noting for anyone else reading this thread.

Jim, I get the condensation when I use my jacket but never anything sticky, or gooey.

Just make sure it is dry before folding it back up or it will develope mold inside the jacket. I use mine mostly in the winter so I just hang it up right near the coal stove in the basement to dry out. Yes the smell of smoke is pretty strong but only right near the jacket. As far as the water dripping on the unit and wires my jacket ends well below the unit. If you go look at the pic in the other thread I linked to you can see the jacket ends below the unit. Maybe the jacket wasn't quite down the whole way? HTH

I've used one for some time. I usually don't put it on until after the heavy early smoke settles down. Then, if I line the hole up with the vent, I don't get so much smoke and junk down the side.

Here's a home-made jacket. Not as pretty as yours, but no smokey/gooey buildup either:

I'll bet that another vent hole toward the top would help your situation. All the WSM really needs is something to keep it dry and out of direct wind - a few more vent holes are not a bad thing.

Very helpful thread. I have and use a Guru. I do trust the temp probe and never use any other external thermometer when using it.

I have and haven't used the jacket. I orginally bought it thinking I would need/use it this Winter, but frankly I haven't needed it for any of the cooks yet.

Weather hasn't been all that cold or windy yet during any of the cooks except last weekend, but I was using the WSM to grill up high off the coals some of Bryan's Road Chicken recipe (20 lbs of de-boned thighs and breasts) for a party. So jacket wasn't needed.

Glad to see this thread to get educated on actual use of the jacket.

Jim,
I've been using both the Guru and the jacket for years. Jacket only when the temp gets below freezing at night (WSM is under cover, otherwise I might use it in heavy rain too). I've gotten the condensation, but it seems warm enough when I pull it off that standing it to the side is sufficient to let it dry out. Never run into anything gooey or sticky. I am wondering if your lid was not on flat and that somehow contributed.

I love the guru and use it for nearly every cook. I'm now buidling a UDS and have asked the guys at BBQGURU to send me an adapter door so I can try my old Competitor in it. I'm hoping it works well so I have an excuse to buy a DigiQ!
