Grill Heaven!

As I have mentioned, my grill restoration work has been taking a back seat to catching up with my wife and family. This past Thursday through today (Saturday) Faith and I took a quick mini-vacation over to the west coast, staying in the lovely town of Venice, FL on the Gulf of Mexico. It is a laid back, pretty town with a vibrant downtown that leads then to the beach. We enjoyed two sunsets over the ocean which is special for us east coast Floridians.

While driving around the first day, I spotted a store that said "Swimming Pools and Barbecue Grills." It looked pretty blase, but I asked for a few minutes to shop and told her that they "probably have three or four grills." Well...

I would estimate better than FORTY grills! They had every conceivable Weber and Big Green Egg grill you could think of. They also had pellet grills from Green Mountain Grills, Smokin Brothers (I had never seen these, and like my Rec Tec they use the shorter front to back path for the auger, except these put the pellet holder in the front allowing the top lid to double as a tray table.), and finally Yoder which are pricey buy man are they heavily built. I picked up a new beef rub and got bags of Dave in KC's recommended duo of Lumberjack "Char Hickory" and "Cherry." My wife said I should for Father's Day:D!

Probably more interesting to me was this was the first time I got to check out in person gas grills from Napoleon. They were priced pretty much competitively with the similar Webers. I would say this company and to a lesser extent Broil King are the closest price/quality competitors that Weber has.

I thought you might enjoy a few comparison pictures:

Here is a Napoleon non-stainless grill that looks to compete with the Genesis II 3 burner + sear burner:

It looks small because my picture cut out the left table and the right one is folded down. Here is a look inside. Napoleon uses proprietary stainless grates with a wavy "S" curve:

Here is a black Weber that they had nearby:

About the same price. This one has the 9mm stainless bar grates:

Speaking of these new Weber stainless rod grates, I know they are not 100% up to "rcplanebuyer quality," but I think you would have to admit they are at least close, and look REALLY NICE. They are not at all widely spaced as some of you have lamented about earlier Weber stainless rod grates, and they have nice finishing:

So, I think these grills are competitive, but based on my in person look and touch, I would have to say in my opinion advantage Weber.

Napoleon grills are pretty popular here, I stumbled upon a demonstration today. The guy cooking said the sear station reaches 800c on gas, quite impressive.

The grills looks quite solid as well. Prices are a bit higher that comparable Webers.

Jon,

The Napoleons are very nice. The model I compared above was probably the least expensive one they had, so there were larger and higher end models beyond this entry one. I did think that the one I photographed was a very close competitor to the Weber Genesis II, and at this store about the same price.

I don't think you would go wrong either way. Also, my comparison obviously didn't include USING either grill, so it is hardly a complete review!

Jon we've vacationed at Venice or near there a couple of times. Really nice vacation spot. Did you find any shark's teeth?

You don't hear much about napoleon grills. But they look really nice. I do think the curved grates are kind of silly though. They just look so gimmicky.

Greg,

I was the ultimate tourist (funny coming from a Floridian) and bought a little packet of them! It was a nice place to go as a couple for a quiet getaway. I would go back, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone with kids or teenagers. The opposite of Orlando, and that was exactly what we were looking for:)!

Yeah, I think the Napoleon grates are a little odd. The grills looked very good overall, though. I think that whether by choice or not, Napoleon grills are primarily sold at grill specialty places like the one I visited. That obviously limits their visibility to the average consumer. Broilmaster has the same problem. Plus their grills don't attract attention even at the specialty stores in spite of the fact that they are very well made and work extremely well.

Venice is pretty close to where my parents live (They're in Rotonda and used to live in Englewood). So I've seen the sunset a million times but it never gets old.

My local appliance store sells Napoleon grills and I remember checking them out a few years ago. I needed a NG grill. In the end, I ended up saving $1K by buying a used NG grill and swapping out the manifold.

You really start to see the high end brands when looking at bbq islands. For whatever reason Weber doesn't seem to be featured in that arena.

What I do know is that if I was going to spend $10,000 or more on an outdoor kitchen / BBQ island it had better have top quality components. And I'm not sure that Weber offers the same quality as the very high-end grills.

Beautiful sunset, Jon. Makes me want to head
back down to the Keys.

Thanks, Dave! It was really nice. I had never experienced it before. I am never motivated enough to go to the ocean early enough here to watch the sun rise over the ocean.

I am looking forward to trying out your recommended 50/50 mix of Lumberjack Char Hickory and Cherry:D! That place had barrels full of Lumberjack pellets.

Jason,

When you get to that league you are talking about a whole different group of low volume, high end grill manufacturers. All 304 stainless and all the bling. Sometimes I wonder how well some of these things really do cook, but they certainly look impressive and cost a ton:rolleyes:. A friend of mine splurged on one of those setups. I don’t remember the brand and I know he doesn’t know much about grills, but he dropped a used-car’s worth on what he got. I saw it pre-used, so it really looked spectacular.

I think Weber and other mid-market makers have ceded that territory, but that doesn’t stop them from at least flirting with it now and then with ideas like the add-on cabinetry that gave the Genesis 300 grills a semi-built in look.

Napoleon grills are also very popular in Germany. I am in a German grill forum and there are lots of folks who switched from Weber to Napoleon because of quality. Here in the US they are just not as common as Weber and I have never seen any fire sales on Napoleon grills. Plus used are really really rare.

Have looked at the Napoleon grills at the place that did my fireplace replacement (they sell BroilMaster and Napoleon). The Napoleons are very well made but I cannot get past the wavy grates

Here in Canada (especially in Ontario) Napoleon grills are as popular as Weber. The factory is 50 miles north of Toronto in Barrie ON.
I have both - I use a Weber S320 as my Winter BBQ and a Napoleon Prestige 750 as my Spring/Summer/Fall BBQ.
Napoleon have several series of gassers - with the low end being built in China (sold by the box stores and a uniquely Canadian chain of hardware/sporting goods/automotive parts and accessories store called "Canadian Tire").
Napoleon BBQs at the high end of their Prestige Pro series have more features and gimmicks than Weber.

IMHO the Weber is a better built unit.

In the charcoal end of the business - Webers pretty well rule vs Napoleon.

In the portable gas grill market there are probably 50 Weber Q's sold for every Napoleon Travel Q sold.

Glad to hear you and the wife took a time out, sometimes that's what it takes to get the engine restarted. Not familiar with Napoleon or Broil Master so it was nice to see the comparison pictures between the Weber and Napoleon, they look pretty much equal.
