I’ve been lurking for several weeks, so I figured it’s time for an introduction. Hope it’s not too wordy.

I won’t go into details about my early grilling days, but I had been looking at new grills since this spring (with no real preference except not really wanting to spend $700 - $1000 for a new grill), but never shot the lock off the wallet. I just kept soldiering on with my old grill.

Then about two months ago, I was on an errand run and saw a Weber grill at the end of someone’s driveway. Checked it out, looked OK, so I drove home and convinced my wife to help me get it in the car. Turns out it was a Spirit E-310. The previous owner apparently discarded it because part of the base rusted out, and one of the casters collapsed. After we got it home, I straightened out the caster bracket, and re-attached it at three points to the base with sheet metal screws. Grill was in pretty good shape (it’s a 2012), except the electronic ignition didn’t work. I’ve cleaned it up (the grates are in really good shape), and have been cooking on it since. I’ve been pretty impressed by the evenness of the heat.

My wife has an elderly aunt that lives about 100 miles away from us; we go there every few weekends to take care of things. She does not have a grill, and I figured we needed one for her house (for us), so I kept browsing Craigslist. I eventually found a Spirit E-210 on Craigslist for $50, so I went and looked at it. It was in great shape, but upon close inspection, the battery cover for the ignition was broken, so the owner just gave it to me. This one cleaned up real nice, too. It’s a 2015. This grill was going to the aunt’s house.

Then my daughter’s boyfriend got a new grill, so he gave me his 2012 Q200. I cleaned that one up (the grates are not-so-great, but will work for now). This one has a piezo ignitor that works- maybe this one will be going to the aunt’s house.

Then, after reading all the posts about fixing up grills, I felt I needed an older one to fix up. Found a Genesis 2 grill with a red lid for free. All thirteen flavorizers are in terrible shape- a few crumbled when I took them out before putting the grill in my car. Lots of spent matches in the firebox (ignitor didn’t work). Haven’t had too much time to check it out yet, as I had to get it hidden under my deck before my wife got home. Based on the serial number deciphering page, if Chris’ L3 162105 is from 1991, my L3 125566 is older than that. It would be nice to know how old it really is.

This one is going to be a project. I’ll be assessing what it needs over the next few weeks. This one will not be going to the aunt’s house.

That’s it for now. I’ve been enjoying reading everyone’s posts, pictures, reviews, and tips and hints.
