I just used for the first time a weed burner from an outfit called Flame Engineering. I ordered it off the internet at their site www.flameengineering.com; look for the Weed Dragon.

I filled the charcoal ring about 3/4 full and hit the coals on top with the flame; it took about 2 minutes to get most of the top layer of coals about 75% lit. It then took about another 5 minutes for the coals to get mostly ashed over.

While this might not be a big deal to most people, it's just about a must have to anyone interested in doing competitions. Not to mention how much fun it is playing with a 100,000 btu torch.

Oh yeah, it works pretty good on weeds as well.

P.S. No, I don't have any affiliation with Flame Engineering. I had been trying to buy one from Harbor Freight off the internet but they kept back ordering it until I finally went and found the one I bought somewhere else.

I used a couple of WSM's to do six racks of ribs on Sunday. Used the weed burner to start the charcoal ring, hit crusing temp within 5-10 minutes after initial ignition. Much faster than using a chimney.

I also like to use it to burn off the crud on the grilling racks. I just cremate everything and then hit it with a brush.

My Weber kettle has a fancy high priced propane starter for the brickets. I don't use it any more since the weed burner is so much faster and easier to use. Just pour some brickets on one side of the kettle, blast them for a few minutes, and you are cooking steaks. Almost as fast as a gas grill and alot better.
