Going to paint 18.5 WSM-shown no love

I got a 18.5 WSM for free. It has never been used but has sat outside with no cover for 5 yrs being shown no love.

I went and bought all new stainless hardware and had to use a grinder to get the bolts off. I drilled out the rivets holding the dampers on and ordered new ones.

The bottom bowl was full of water and other stuff. Rust is bad with large pieces of porcelain missing.

Will either go red and black or if I can find gold high temp then will go gold and black for my SEC Mizzou Tigers. Will post pics when done.

Check to see how much powder coating costs. It's a little pricey but you will get more than favorable results.

I made a mini-wsm and realized it had to be red, so I sprayed my black Smokey Joe and aluminum tamale pot with bright red caliper paint.

The top and middle look great but the red paint on the bottom has darkened significantly. I understand that caliper paint is good to 900F. I'm now looking for 1400F glossy red paint

Man, that's something. Good luck with it.

If the bottom bowl is the only part of the outer body with significant rust and/or porcelain missing, I would contact Weber and purchase a new bottom bowl. With the hardware replacement you've done, and associated cleanup, once you get the new bowl the WSM should be as good as new

After all, you got it for free - so you'd still be "on the cheap". I think the bottom goes for like 60 bucks. And you can still take advantage of free shipping for a few more days (till the end of the month).

Hey Derrick-

Why don't you paint it Crimson and Blue? I think that'd look much better than Black and Gold.
