Genesis 4900/5000

After checking out some new Weber grills and realizing they are not what the used to be I started looking around for a Older 1000-5000 series Genesis and had it narrowed down to a couple grills.
I made the 450 mile round trip from Mass to NY to pick up this:

It is in very good condition from the real wood painted grey and complete with the glass doors and operating shelves. Over the Winter months I will strip it completely down to the frame like I am currently doing with my 1999 Weber 700 Spirit.

I have only seen a picture of one other 4900 as most were ordered as 5000 models with the side burner but this model has the side porcelain shelf which matches the lid and striped glass doors.

I will be hitting up several members for some ideas such as Stephen R who did a fantastic job on his 5000.

Would have been really cool if you'd found the side burner. True outdoor kitchen ;-) What is the hole in the control panel? Although I don't think I'd go 450 miles for one LOL

That is a good looking grill. That is one I have not seen before. Congrats on a great find.

This model did not come with a side burner like the 5000.
The hole in the control panel is the FlameCheck button which is as I understand is a unit that fails quite often, the former owner replaced the manifold with one without that option.

Hi Jeff,
great find! They are well, well, worth a restore

Pretty much the sideburers of the 1000-5000s are the same unit, and the manifolds usually have a gas take off point you can attach them to, so easy to do an upgrade to a full 5000. (I did not know there was a 4900 option)

Rich Dahl had one for sale recently http://tvwbb.com/showthread.php?65167-Get-Parts-for-your-Genesis-Project-and-Help-TVWBB , send him a message-he is a top bloke.

The "side porcelain shelf" you refer to I think is actually a serving tray?

Enjoy your 'top of the range' Weber gasser!

Stephen,
I was wondering when you'd chime in :)

I seen your 5000 restore and it's a beauty. I'm sure I'll have many questions for you once I start mine but I am finishing up my 1999 Spirit 700 right now so one project at a time.
My replacement manifold does have a port for the side burner option so that's a plus and I have seen Rich Dahl's burner for sale but it's a stand-alone unit, so I will keep looking.
You are correct about that serving tray...Weber thought of everything huh?

Jeff

Hi Jeff,
I think you will find the sideburner Rich might still have will fit- send him a PM.

Stephen, you know the old story about you'll never need something until you get rid of it. Well I gave the burner to a friend of mine to upgrade his 2000 to a 3000.
Now I'm going to build a cart for my 18.5 WSM using the frame from my 1000LX, which of course would fit the side burner perfectly and perfect for lighting the coals for the WSM.
I'm now on the hunt for one myself.

Was looking for a Side Burner and came across this:

A co-worker needed a grill and I needed the sideburner so for $25.00 each we both scored big.
The grill is super clean and besides the rusted out Flavorizer Bars it doesn't need a thing.

That works for sure. That's what I'll probably have to do as finding just a side burner the odds are slim and none.

Just got off the line registering both of my "new" Webers with them.
The helpful woman said the grill was an 1988/1989 Genesis 5 LP based on the serial #L5.
Sure doesn't look like a 28 year old grill.

Found this helpful past post from Weber employee Joe Osborn :

"It's a Genesis 5000. You could confirm this by looking at the serial number. If it starts with a "KL5" or "KN5" it is a Gen 5000 from 1993 (the first year they had glass doors) or a S/N starting with EH, EO, ER, EI, EZ, or EE. If it is a two letter code, I would need the complete S/N to confirm the model. Production for this grill started in 1993 and ended in 1999 though some of the later models had stainless steel doors according to the info we have. I hope this info helps."

Never heard of SS doors on a 5000. Interesting. Good find.

Was just about to purchase a new "no name" grill cover from Amazon for the 4900 when I get a e-mail reminder from e-bay that a new, still wrapped in plastic, Weber Cover #9859 was on the auction block with free shipping.

SOLD!

I much prefer the older rubberized, vented cover to any of the other offerings.

The 4900 has been wearing the Weber #9954 while the 3200 is getting restored and it's a little droopy on it, kinda like seeing that guy at a Wedding in a suit two sizes too big.
We can't have that, can we?
