I made a 50/50 mix of white vinegar , to clean the surface of the top mid section , and that worked just dandy , it says in instructions to use acetone also . Is there something else that can be used instead of acetone to do the final cleaning step .

You could use just about anything that will (1) remove grease or oil, and (2) not leave behind any residue. If you don't have any acetone, you can buy nail polish remover that is 100% acetone (the regular nail polish remover may include an oil which is perhaps good for the nails, but not for getting a good bond with a glue or adhesive). This avoids having to buy a quart of acetone when you only need an ounce. If you don't want to use acetone, then brake cleaner (from any auto parts store) is designed to remove oils and leave no residue. But like any solvent there are potential hazards - basically avoid breathing any of it. My suggestion is Dawn dish detergent and hot water, rinsed well, or Simple Green.
