Front Shelf for EX6

Unpackaged and installed the front shelf this morning. Here’s a few comments and initial thoughts.

  • The directions say all you need is a screw driver but you also need an allen wrench or other tool to loosen and tighten the front screws on the barrel that the shelf bracket attaches to as well as needle nose pliers to install the mini hitch pin that holds the rod together.
  • It took about 30 minutes but it was 29 degrees and my glasses were fogging over and my fingers wouldn’t bend so I had to gather all the parts and move back inside to assemble the bracket that holds the shelf which is about 90% of the total assembly time.
  • The metal is the same as the right-side shelf that comes with the SF and is very good quality.
  • I don’t see an advantage to the split shelves instead of just one long one but maybe I will once I use them more.
  • The rod that the shelves swivel on is also split and is held together with a mini hitch pin. The rod joins in a very awkward spot and installing the hitch pin was just like attempting to thread a needle for me. After about 10 drops on the ground I finally got it using needle nose pliers. This seems to be the weak point of the shelves to me. One solid rod would have been much sturdier.
  • Overall, the shelves seem sturdy enough and I’m sure they will each hold the 20 pounds Weber advertises. I do worry that the plastic bushings at the swivel points will wear over time but again will have to wait and see.
  • I wonder if the handle on the door will hit everything on the shelf when opening or closing the door but will need to see. This might be less of a problem if the shelf was deeper.
  • After assembly I had trouble engaging and disengaging to raise and lower the shelf. Took some fist pounding but this will likely get better.
  • For anyone that doesn’t have tables near your grill this shelf really is a must have and I highly recommend it even at the ~$100 MRSP.
  • I’ve asked the real Santa to bring me the left-side shelf and together the three shelves should provide all the space I need for any cook.
  • I know there are non-Weber brand products out there but have no idea if they are better or worse and what their price is. Myself, I will stick with Weber brand products but on the other hand I like supporting small businesses whenever I can.
