Free CL find: Spirit SP310 SS

Picked this one up Saturday for free! It's really dirty, but structurally is great shape. Everything works. Igniter works, grates, flavor bars, and burners are in great shape, although, the flames are mostly orange. It was full of grease, didn't look like it had ever been turned on hi to burn off grease and drippings. Not a dent and only one small nickel-sized rust spot on the frame next to the left side of fire box, and a couple of spots inside the cabinet.

When I got it home, I ran it on medium for a good while to burn off as much grease as possible. Black smoke boiled out of it for a while. Once it quit smoking, I turned it on hi for about 15 minutes and then shut it down.

Today, brushed down the grates and loose soot in fire box. Checked out burners and they look to be in very good condition, except some of the port holes are blocked or semi- blocked. The bottom of the box is full of burnt crud. I need to remove the burners and clean them really well. Tried to remove the burner screws that attach to the left-hand end of the fire box, but they are rusted. Any suggestions for removal would be appreciated.

I'm going to disassemble the grill and clean it up, replace hardware with stainless, and touch up where it's rusted. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.


Based on the serial # it's model # is 3720301 - Spirit SP 310 SS. How can I find out what year it was manufactured? I was looking for an old Genesis redhead, but couldn't pass up this one for free.

Elizabeth- gray find for free. I just got a similar Spirit but mine had the electric ignition and once I registered it with Weber it said it was an '09-'12. Your's looks like it has the manual igniter (which I prefer) and makes me think its an earlier generation than mine but I might be wrong. I saw a listing on here somewhere that showed based on the letter prefix what the year was for the grill.

No need to remove those screws. The burner tubes have notches in them that slip into those screws/washers. Once you remove the manifold you should be able to wiggle each burner out of the grasp of each bolt. Will make more sense once you dive in. :)

I think they mean the screws that hold the manifold in place and those have to be removed. A penetrating oil and patience. If they break than drill them out and use stainless steel cap screws with SS wing nuts. This what I have done. If they come out prior to reinstalling them put a coat of never seize on them and it will helo them come out next time
 
Andy K: Printed a schematic diagram off Weber site, and it shows the grill to be 2007 - 2008.

LMichaels: I was actually referring to the screws in the fire box on the left side.

Any way to find an owners manual for this grill?

Still would like to find a vintage Genesis at some point.

Try this, since you already know the serial number. Make sure you get the first 2 letters before entering the actual number.

It's an 07-08 model.

I love me an older redhead, but the frames on those are typically in much rougher condition.
Doesn't stop me from picking them up, though. :D
 
Well those screws never touch them. Eventually though they will rot away. I made hold down brackets to replace them on my old red head
 
What is the best way to prep the painted surfaces to prepare them for re painting? Sandpaper, steel wool? Should it be primed after sanding? I have disassembled the grill and the frame has several rusty areas. The exterior of the firebox needs to be painted too.
 
For me, I sand the rusted frame spots really well and run sandpaper over the entire frame to "scratch" the surface. Then prime the bare metal and maybe a light primer coat on the entire frame if I'm feeling like it. After it's dry, I'll shoot 2 coats of black (I prefer gloss) and let it dry completely.

For the firebox, I just clean it really good by soaking overnight in a big tub of soapy water followed by a scotch-brite pad. After it's dry, I just spray it with black high-temp paint. After that, put it all back together. Depending on the paint, some need to cure a week followed by 'baking' it at 200 degrees for a while. I just turn the grill on low for the 'baking' process.

We like stories with photos around these parts too. Hint, hint. :cool:

Okay, I have the entire grill torn down, and in the process of cleaning, sanding, and priming frame. Started cleaning the burners, and found that the welded on flange on the small crossover burner tube has rusted thru at one of the welds spots and several of the metal dividers between the burner holes has rusted away. Called weber and they are sending a whole new burner assembly! Also purchased a new igniter, even though, the one on the grill works but the igniter box is half rusted away. Figured just as well get a new one on it while it's torn down.

I soaked the stainless part of the hood in degreaser overnight expecting to be able to use 0000 steel wool and clean it up today, but the soaking did not help. There is a film of, I guess, grease and smoke on the back of the hood where the smoke rises. The degreaser I used came from Lowe's and is pink...came in a dark brown bottle...don't recall the name at the moment. Can y'all give any ideas on what to use or how to remove this cooked on film?

Great news on the burner tubes. The crossover tube used to be available for around 6 bucks, but unsure is Weber still sells that part anymore. They revamped their system, and not for the better. If you need a new door magnet, you have to purchase the entire door. :mad:

A new igniter is a decent purchase. Especially with new burner tubes, that'll give you years of trouble free use.

Unsure of your degreaser & soaking method. Sometimes, even soaking doesn't cut through some crud. 0000 steel wool is also pretty fine and not a great choice for scrubbing. Best suited for final polishing. On stainless steel, I'm amazed how well the regular ol' Bar Keepers Friend works. But.... The back side of the lid is very tough to get back to like-new condition. It's possible, but it'll take some elbow grease. Just remember to go 'with the grain' and not against it.

The crossover tube is no longer available as a single purchase. So I'm getting all new burner tubes.
 
This is what the bottom try in the grill cabinet looks like :(. Before tearing down the grill, it didn't look too bad because all the rust was cover by the paint. I have scraped off most of the loose paint. The tray is solid, but rusted everywhere, except where the vinyl label covered. Is this worth trying to cleanup? I have an angle grinder and wire brush, but I'm not sure it will take off all the rust. Is there a better way to clean off the rust, or should I try and purchase a new one?
