Yes, top the unlit with the lit, assemble the cooker, load in the meat, all at once, as the info at the link Bill posted notes.
When doing a Minion in cold temps, more lit can be required. I'd probably go with ~30.
A windscreen is a good idea if you haven't set one up already.
For two butts, I wrap each in foil after cooking, wrap both in a bath towel, then stick in my microwave, which just holds two, as an alternative to a cooler. There is no need to preheat it first. You can use an oven instead, but wrap well in towels--be generous, unless the rest time will be relatively short (less than 2 hours).
