In the past I've always made my own rubs but I'd read good things here about texasbbq rubs. I ordered a pound of number #1 and #2. I used #2 for a high-heat brisket cook and it was terrific.
For New Year's day, we had bought a fresh turkey and I was looking for a fast/easy recipe. The guys at texasbbq had sent a couple of turkey recipes in their newsletter but I wrote off the idea of a brisket/rib rub for turkey. While searching the web, I ran into a favorable review of their recipe so I figured what the heck and gave it a try. It was very easy, 3 sticks of melted butter, some minced garlic, half a cup of #1, loosen the skin, get the mixture under the skin and on to the bird. Another half cup of #1 went on to the outside of the bird. I used a bamboo skewer to keep the skin in place.
Five hours later, we were eating arguably our best smoked turkey in a long history of smoked turkeys. The rub was sweet and a little spicy, the skin browned nicely due to the butter and the meat was incredibly moist.
I'm not sure how I feel about paying more for a rub than the meat, but so far I'm very happy with the quality of the rub.
