first k comp observations

well, i got me some and i'm lighting it in my chimney right now. that stuff smokes alot. a bit more than ro for sure. it still has an off smell but a big improvement. ro to me still has a wood kinda smell. also found that the briq is a bit smaller and lighter than a ro briq. will write further as i go along.

well that was interesting. the chimney was close to fully lighted the way i like it a few minutes faster than ro but not enough to me to be an issue. put it in the kettle and immediately noticed that the stuff is burning hot. almost to hot for me. put the meat on indirect and then later direct for a char. after dying down for the indirect cook with the lid on the coals came back up hot in a reasonable time. but then it kept going. again it was burning hotter than i liked but i got the char i wanted. i continued to cook other stuff including some hamburgers. the hot coals soon turned things into an inferno so i had to put the lid on to kill the coals a bit. the coals stayed hot and lasted a very resonable time. ash is definately improved also so i can see that this is a big improvement over the blue bag k. i think its a bit hot for me but thats just me and nothing wrong with the ck. i'm just wondering if it might be to much for the average griller. next is to see what its like on a smoke.

well, went outside and looked at the ash that was made. not bad. i'm surprised. also the leftover briquettes are for the most part hard so i think can easily be reused. hate to say it but i'm impressed. now to do something on the price. next comment will be when i do a smoke. might be a few weeks though.

I don't think I ever had leftover K after shutting everything down. What appeared to be leftover was all ash. It's good to hear this one may be different.

glad you tried it, I agree w/ the price comment, although its fine if it stays there I guess, basicly my thoughts are just like yours except I like to know that I can get a hot fire If I need. thanks for sharing. get your wsm? or are you still smokin on the kettle beast.

The price is very reasonable if you have a Costco membership. Last time I was there they had the double pack of 16 pound bags for $12 and change. Pretty good price.

steve, i don't know how long that deal will be there. dan, yes, i'm still smoking on the kettle. everytime i do it i question my need for a wsm. but if i find a deal i'll get it just because.
