First Brisket Smoke on My New Portable Grill (Cusinart Gratelifter) (w/ pics)

Just got a new portable grill, the Cuisinart Gratelifter CCG-100. I like it because it has levers on the side that automatically lift up the food so you can move the coals around underneath. I also like the lid thermometer, and the ash catcher below.

I decided to try smoking a brisket in it to see how it works for that. It's a medium sized flat (about 5-6 lbs), and it's kinda thin, so hopefully it will cook fast. Supper is in 6 hours, so I may wrap it and stick it in the oven after about 3. Dome temp is 250 degrees. I'm using hickory chips for smoke.

Rub has (listed by quantity): paprika, brown sugar, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, instant coffee powder, black pepper, cumin, oregano, and finally, cocoa powder. Might sound a bit weird, but it's pretty incredible.

I will add pics throughout the day:

Thanks. I'll be thrilled if this comes out well, as the grill is small enough to easily stick in the car when we go on vacation.

The temp fell a little too low, so I added more hot coals. In order to avoid this happening again, I put some water in the foil pan, and then opened up all the vents on bottom.

Also added some more apple/hickory chips and basted with some fruit juice.

Will definitely post more pics, don't worry.

Looks good so far. Keep us informed. I went to RISD many years ago and still get up to the Ocean state a few times a year to see friends (and occasionally BBQ !)
Love it up there. Good luck.

Bristol is gorgeous and Colt State Park in June is amazing. The cold weather during the winter stinks, but the long spring up here is great.

Temp is 160, smells amazing. Gonna baste, foil, and stick in the oven. Needs to finish soon - supper is in three hours and lots of guests are coming.
