Fire King lump cooks

I finally picked up a bag of Fire King lump to try. Paid $10.99 for a 20 lb bag.
It's been a few years since I tried lump, but I would like to make Fire King my main charcoal since it's local (Missouri) and small time owned and operated.

It seemed consistent with the good review given on the "Naked Whiz"
http://www.nakedwhiz.com/lumpdatabase/lumpbag57.htm

I ran the WSM at 280 on the spareribs for about 4 hrs, with a 2/3 ring full. Plenty of fire left afterwards.

The "boneless chuck short ribs" from Costco turned out great on the Performer. (captured a spark in the last photo)

I'll be on the lump learning curve for awhile, and will still use briqs too. But I really like this stuff.
Easy to light, low spark, and the clean smell of a campfire.

A MO forestry website states that "Struemph Charcoal Works" bags their charcoal for 3 other companies besides the Fire King brand.
I'll try to find out the other brands if I visit their plant in Belle, MO to purchase direct.
I've read that a 40 lb bag is only $12 at the plant

Royal Oak has a big plant in Eminence, MO, so that would also qualify as the home team.

RO has other locations too, I have seen some that was made in Paraguay. So, be sure to scan the bag for where it was made.

Lump is really not difficult to work with. Once you do get used to it, you will wonder why you ever used briquettes. Switch over asap!
