I wonder why weber has a wide slot on two sides of the fire grate, while loading the fire ring i had several briquets fall to the bottom thru these wide slots. When i added new coals, i had some more fall thru the slots. Anyone else have this problem, and if so, what was your solution. I have a new Weber Bullet and i am also wondering why weber does not have a hole to put a temp gauge in. I really am hesitant to drill a hole in my new beautiful smoker to attach one. I stuck a polder through the top vent hole, but it is hard to not hit what is cooking inside. An attached gauge would be nice.

I have wired my firering to the grate which allows me to shrink those holes your talking about. Makes it easier to dispose of hot coals when that needs to be done.
Chris covers a lot of the question you may have
how this cooker works and modifications.

I also wired my fire ring to the grate, and while I was at it, I "stitched" some wire down the length of these open slots in a zig-zag pattern to make the opening much smaller. Seems to work OK.

Jerry, heres a tip. i took a grate from my old Brinkman & 'criss-crossed' it & that ended the "small pieces promptly [falling] right through the grate".
