Fire Bricks in Water Pan

This weekend will be my second cook on my new 22 WSM. My first cook I used just a foiled empty pan and had pretty good success in controlling temps.

Does anyone see any benefit to placing two fire bricks in the water pan and then foiling the pan?

It was a nice day here in Michigan and I was outside and started thinking...it can be dangerous at times.

I used a clay saucer and have taken it out because it used more fuel. The temp below the water pan was higher then without the clay saucer. It worked to good as a heat barrier.

I think firebricks will serve the same purpose as a clay saucer, sand, water, or whatever other item you want to use as a heat sink.

The key is can you control temps... the water has such a high caloric content it is ideal for temp fluctuations but really sucks down the fuel. If you had good success with temp control with jsut a foiled empty pan, stick with it. If you want a little more stability, try the bricks or a saucer. Good luck!
