Finally down to ONE more project for the house!

Two stage furnace and new AC installed in advance of the oncoming lousy weather for the holiday! Last thing to be done will be a water heater. That will happen next year. What a Valentine’s Day present! I’m such a romantic. Good thing my wife loves me.

I was going to install a tankless water heater for my daughter. They bought it, now I am so buried and her old 1959 house is such a nightmare of plumbing I called in a plumbing guy to have a look. $1200 I almost choked, but I understand. So I am hiring the guy to install a 50 gal tank unit. For $450 P&L and the unit only set the kid back $600 instead of $1400. Not the best solution but, best for now

Not doing tankless, it’s just the two of us and a dishwasher so, unlimited is superfluous. I’m not sure if want to go bigger than the current 40 gal, no need. We shall see

I'll do tankless again in our house. I see no need to keep a giant tea kettle hot all the time. They do pay for themselves especially now with the high fuel prices. Last longer too
But I have mixer repairs comping outta my ears (not complaining), and the kid's heater is blowing hot water out the top and it's really ready to let loose and flood the basement

The plumbing shenanigans is why I said I won't install a tankless myself. I'd have had no problem swapping in a new tank heater, but the g/f really wanted a tankless. Now that the ducting issues have been sorted out, the tankless is working pretty good. We paid rather more than what's mentioned above, though. We're definitely off on the lower end of the usage spectrum, and yeah, not keeping the kettle hot makes sense with rising energy costs.

For anybody contemplating installing a tankless, I would HIGHLY recommend a good particulate filter before your heater.

Yeah, our water softener recently bit the dust and is discharging material when it regenerates. At first I simply bypassed it, but it's really hard to live with water that is like gravel. So I installed a whole house filter AFTER the softener. I have the new one sitting in the garage but I seriously doubt I will be able to get after it until Feb some time. So I am using the old one and since I have the filter in line not worrying. It's catching anything coming through.
Also the $1200 I quoted for install did NOT include the cost of the water heater. Only P&L necessary to install it. The heater itself was $1400. Now in my own house it was a cake walk. I had it done in just a few hours and that included multiple trips to Menards for "stuff". But, my house I had a wall to mount it to, I have an exposed basement and it's much more modern than the daughter's house which is a hodge podge of plumbing looking like the 3 stooges in "A Plumbing We Will Go". And all if it done via permits by so called "pros" and PASSING INSPECTION! Kinda stuff tha makes me sick. Thankfully the guy I am hiring is going to do things correctly. (I hope :D)
I guess who knows what to expect here. When I see the workmanship on our own home, Thinks like electrical connections made with plastic packing tape and the spaghetti bowl of wiring issues I've had, the number of homes in our subdivision that have all gone up in flames (by the same builder) I guess I should expect the things I see

One day in and I’m still surprised at not having the famous big “blast of full flame“ heat, the gentle flow is amazing. I’m quite pleased. The guy’s doing the job were the quietest workmen I have ever had in the house. aside from the occasional “tin knocking” I hardly knew they were here! They did a good job cleaning up after themselves and the unit is just humming along. This weekend will be a good test! Merry Christmas!

Perfect timing in advance of this big cold front.

Cool thing is with ours, I can view on the t/stat display how hard it's running in terms of burner output, and blower speeds. Even at our worst the polar vortexes have thrown at us it's never had to run over 50% output. And this one is only a 70k BTU, that replaced a 125K BTU. I'm hoping for even better performance this year as this past spring I had attic insulation added to bring us up close to R60. So I am hoping the house stays "cozier" :D

Are you guys on natural gas or propane ? if Propane, how big of a tank do you have?
Natural, I am Hoping to see a significant reduction in heating and cooling costs this year. Consumers Power makes plenty and is always bitching when the winter isn’t cold enough or summer is not hot enough for people to dump thousands into their greedy coffers! The price hike after a warm winter made me simply furious! “We LOST money this winter!“ was their cry! COW PIES says I! Jerks!!

I know my actual "bill" continues to rise but actual "use" is WAY down from the old days. One thing this new HVAC does is coast along at VERY low output for longer periods of time rather than "blast" out heat (or cold) and turn off then blast again and turn off. So we get a nice quiet and comfy heating cycle. The colder it gets outside the system reprograms itself to run longer and lower. Likewise on the AC side it also will run very slow without actually cooling the house but simply dehumidifying it. So in summer I can keep the stat set for low humidity and higher temps like say 78. And you can see the outside unit running so slowly you cannot hear it and the you can almost count the fan revolutions. Likewise when it's brutal cold like it's becoming this AM (only 3F currently) the furnace will him along very low with only one burner on at very low setting and very low fan speed. Nice system and much more comfy both seasons than the old 125k blast of hot, followed by cool down, then another blast of hot, followed by cool down. I guess much more efficient as well. Since being only a 70k furnace and running at low (40%) output is only 28k. Likewise the AC will drop down to only 3600 BTU and run like that to simply keep things dry and rarely ever "kick" up at all

It would be nice if we had natural gas; we heat solely with electric. We can rely on our heat pump to satisfy demand down to an outdoor temp of ~10f degrees (we might be able to rely on it to maintain the setpoint temp if we lower it 1-2f degrees when it's a few degrees colder than 10f outside) but with the coming blast of cold headed our way I'm going to need the electric strips to take over part time.

I'm happy that you're happy with your new unit TFL!
