Father's Day curb find - rolling distance from our house

On Father's Day while walking our dog I found a Genesis Silver on down the road with a cardboard sign "Free - Works".

I guess some dad got a new grill :). It's in surprisingly good condition. The burners and regulator look very good. The cast iron grills are in good shape. It's missing a castor.

I removed the sign and rolled it around the corner behind a parked car so I could get the dog back home. I then returned with a standard pneumatic tire hand truck which I slipped under the castor side and strapped so I could walk it the quarter mile back to my house.

Here's the weird part. The previous owner had used self tapping sheet metal screws to attach clear 1/4" plexiglass to the back, left side and front. Any speculation on that would be appreciated. I was worried he was reinforcing a rusted out frame but the frame is fine. I thought maybe he was hoping to counter the wind grilling in the winter on windy days? I guess I'll paint the screws black and put a rubber washer on them and screw them back in.

Parts List:

1. Both castors
2. Drip Pan and holder (7515)
3. Stainless Flavorizer bars
4. QuliMetal 7639 rod grills
5. Igniter
6. Maybe the tray - Existing one is actually in pretty good shape.

Then it's taking a trip to my son's new home in MA.

Nice. I suspect the plexiglass was to keep a dog or animals from getting to the drip tray. My dogs are to short, but tall enough to lick the tongs when I'm not careful. Enjoy your new used grill, good for another 20 years!
I have to remove the tray when we're done grilling or our dog pulls it out. If the owner is the house it was in front of, they do have a big black lab. Crazy thing is the tray couldn't be removed because of the plexiglass.

I’d likely do the same kind of thing but, maybe something like “hardware cloth” and leave it open “just enough” to pull the tray.
I’m not too concerned, if some dog is brave enough to venture into my backyard to get to the grill, I hope he burns his tongue!
