Family Reunion

We had a family reunion not far from my house today. I was going to take my performer & grill up some dogs but then my aunt said my uncle was doing pulled pork sandwiches so I decided on slaw instead.

My cousin & her husband were living with them for about a year while working on their own home, & her husband has thrown several BBQs for family - I mean all-out - ribs for all, plenty of pulled pork, etc..... He got a 22" wsm after selling a nice propane smoker. He and others from the family have put out some seriously good que.

My cousins moved into their new house several weeks ago & the uncle's que (I shouldn't talk too much trash, I probably owe him a bit) was ........................ how do I put this nicely??????????? Lacking.

No rub, no smoke flavor. Seemed like it was cooked in a crockpot.

Anyway, Kevin Kruger's slaw came out great, & it was nice seeing a bunch of family!

This same uncle, I remember him grilling burgers over a fire pit (expanded metal grill) in their backyard at another family reunion when I was young - that's actually the first memory I have of grilling.

...the cousin's husband whose que was missed today - he's brewing in the morning - all grain (I've only brewed partial extract kits & ciders...don't exactly brew ciders :) ).... so I'll probably go over in the morning & "help".

I feel your pain Clint. One thing I have learned in my journey to great BBQ is to feed friends and family and at the same time show them how you are doing it. I have been having my BIL help recently and I think he is getting curious about how it comes out so good. Besides, it is a great bonding experience. With any luck, he will be wanting to smoke his own meats soon enough. Get them involved and all will benefit.

Funny you should post this. We had our annual family reunion/beer fest last month. My SIL was cooking burgers, dogs and chicken. But I was asked to bring my WSM. The pre-formed burgers weren't seasoned, the dogs were not good and the chicken was par boiled to save time. And all cooked on an ECB gasser.
However, the pulled pork was the real star, as was the WSM! The pulled pork went quickly and I was asked many questions about the smoker.
We only get together once a year, so looking forward to next year!

I thought they had it handled and I didn't want to get in the way. Next time I think I'll try to take a bigger part.
