I've just read about the flange mod on this site.

I own one of the "big red" Char-Broil smokers, and also found that bumping the smoker could potentially mean disaster (if the water pan were to spill all over the charcoal).

My fix was to use three stainless steel cotter pins to keep the water pan in place.

I just drilled three small holes through the pan, one for each flange.

It's now rock solid.

When I cooked last weekend using the brinkman water pan, I was a little concerned that the flanges may not hold the extra weight of the additional water. But they did hold...although they looked like they sagged a bit.

Good idea about the cotter pins. What a DISASTER it would be if the water pan fell/overturned during a smoke.
