Exploding Weber Smoker

I used to run tankers for a company that hauled liquid asphalt, and liquid asphalt is hauled at high temperatures so it will flow. Before loading the trailers would have to be completely dry because even a little condensation would create enough steam to almost instantly fill the 7000 gallon tank with steam and send a geyser of foaming hot asphalt out the top. It takes very little water to create a whole lot of steam. And I'm not talking theory here, I know more than a couple drivers who were put in the hospital by this scenario.

The difference is that when the HOT asphalt hits the water, the water gets vaporized but the asphalt is still hot enough to vaporize a lot more water.

Gotta do an experiment - call MythBusters

My two cents have to go towards a curious animal. You may want to have your neighborhood checked for ROUS's (anyone else seen The Princess Bride?). That or Bigfoot.

If it was steam or an exploding rock, there should be some sort of evidence inside the lid or the smoker body. Steam would have cleaned the good stuff off and a rock would have left a dent.

I would go with a loose dog or kid.

I would go with some one knocking it off. If it did blow the top off It should have shot the ribs or coals out with it or blown the charcoal bowl out the bottom. Either way be careful when you cook that water get hot enough to hurt ya if ya aren't careful.
