I posted earlier that my Maverick Redi-Chek ET-73 arrived during my jerky smoke the Saturday before last. I put the thermometer into service then and was disappointed with the range of the wireless signal. I read all the posts here regarding the antenna issues. I cracked my receiver open last week and saw the inverted U shaped piece of the PCB that is suspected to be the antenna. I figured I would solder the wire across the leads later and put everything back together. I did read that sometimes just holding the 6.5 in piece of wire against the receiver case improved reception so I got some water boiling and put the probes in. Well, whaddya know? The thing was picking up signals from all over the place without even messing with the wire. I don't know what I did, but the wireless is doing what I need it to do. This weekend, I put it to use with my first overnight smoke and was able to monitor the temp couchside and bedside. I must have jiggled something into a better orientation. I'd often rather be lucky than good.
