Epay Wood

Anyone ever hear of IPE (pronounced "Epay") wood? It is a hard, dense wood from Brazil (sustainable forests by the way). I had a rear porch floor put on with the stuff (looks amazing) and when they trimmed it off there were a lot of scrap pieces.

Think I could try smoking with this? It is not treated, but I wasn't sure if tropical woods contained any toxins or other odd bits that would ruin a cook. I had not heard of this wood until my contractor recommended it and I saw it installed at his house.

And If I shouldn't use this stuff what about other types of scrap hardwood flooring such as oak?

IPE wood is from a Brazilian Walnut tree. Wlanut trees indigenous to the US are fine for smoking so I would assume this wood should be ok. My only concern is that it may have been chemically treated, especially since it was imported from outside the US.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to check out the teatment info and if it is clean I'll try it out and let everyone know what happens.
