Is there such a beast? I hate using newspaper and I don't have a torch. I use the Gure so I don't need to fire that many (when smoking) but when I have a full batch, that newspaper gets all over the place.

Is there an electric or gas type briquette starter?

FM, I've seen the old style 'heat element loop on a handle' electric charcoal starters like the one my father had with his charcoal grill are still around in stores.

Charbroil makes one and they stock in my local Aubuchons.

Have you tried some paper towels sprayed with a little non-stick cooking spray? ... less fiber

There is one at Amazon for $10. These seem like a great idea. The thing that keeps me from getting one is what to do with it until it cools down. I can see me steping on it or something like that - ouch!

You may want to consider the Weber Starter Cubes. These are ice-cube sized parrafin cubes you place under the chimney to start your lump or briquettes.

They are available at most Home Depot and Lowes stores. 24 in a pack for around $2.00. Have been using them for almost 2 years now, and they work great.
