Yes , the hinge is all me (a friend of mine did the welding, he is super good at that ). The hinge makes is very easy to open
and close the lip with just one finger if I want. Also where to put the lid was always a problem =).
I also have a little 18.5 WSM which I like to hinge sometimes later.
Hope this helps. Peter

Is the chain to keep the lid from opening too far? If so, I would have tried to make the hinge so that it would keep the lid from opening too far. Maybe a pin that could be positioned in a couple of spots to make it adjustable............just a thought. I like your hinge.......just didn't care for the chain.

Peter, looks awesome! I take it the bands around the lips are reinforcement? Did you reposition the grates inside? I see new hardware running along the door openings? Does it get top heavy when opening the lid?

Now thats a cool smoker. I like the hinge assemblies you have set up on it. If you flip the lid over does it cause any stability issues with the weight offset by the lid and its being that tall?

Lookin at this again, you chopped and lowered those mid-sections just by looking at the doors. I take it the lower band helps seat the upper section and the top band is a splice to seam the original flared end?
Details, curious minds got's to know!:wsm:

I feel the same way about the chain....=) it is just for now until I come up with some better idea.

The bands are holding all 3 section together. Cant weld the thing so bends it is , its working very well for now .
I will try to take some pictures of the inside for you.
No problem with top heavy due to extra wide base I made for it.
Hope this helps =)

Ahhhhhh.......yes =) That is correct. I did it that way to kill the unused space inside so it does not need to be heated and to lower the smoker (about 10 '').
The smoker have 4 racks inside ,so the meat can be loaded from the front by opening the doors and one by opening the lid.
I have used the smoker only one time for now (still working on it) and its working super good.

That's a serious looking smoker. Really looks impressive and I can tell you put some thought into it before doing anything. Very cool!
