Dome thermometer clouding

Weep's are supposed to help get moisture out and are installed at the lowest point (think, brick veneer wall)
Seems like these are doing the opposite. Is there a small notch or enough wiggle room at the lid/bezel/therm where the weep is getting moisture from the WSM?

Tim,
There is a alignment notch cut into the top of the Weber dome so the thermometer and trim ring stay centered in place. It will allow for moisture to get in that area since its pretty much at highest point in grill.

For the record mine has been in the house now for 6 days near a heat source and air movement and its still clouded like picture I posted. In this time frame if it was moisture it would have dried out by now..I think this one was just faulty and smoked up and not moisture issue on mine.

Thanks to Weber and their great customer service!!! I got this package in the mail today and they sent not only the thermometer but also a separate package with a new bezel. Doing a turkey smoke this weekend and will see if this one clouds over too.

I never even look at mine since getting the Mav......................d

I usually don't either as most makers thermometers are far from accurate out of the box. My old Charbroil one read 500 degrees on low....LOL.. I just like to get a quick look when I walk by and see what the dome temp is running at but my first one you couldn't read.....Have probes for the critical grate and meat temp measurements

Used and installed the new thermometer yesterday on a smoke of two turkeys for almost 5 hrs. The new one had 0 clouding issues at all during the cook and never even looked any misty like other pics. I think the first one may have had some kind of oil or other in it that burned off and smoked the glass. The orig one has been inside in a area that stays warm and still to today is clouded over as is in the pic I posted so I`m pretty sure it wasn't moisture. The new one also reads 210 when put in boiling water so it will give me a slightly better dome temp visual if needed.

I had the same thought about my clouded thermometer and really doubted it would clear up during the next cook. I was floored how quick it cleared up. I'm still willing to bet the old one would clear up if you set it on the top rack during the next cook.

Its definitely not moisture inside it. Looks like a gas/oil/or?? burn off that clouded up the glass. Like I said above it was in a hot area with air blowing on it for almost 2 weeks straight and no change to it. I even laid it in front of a ceramic heater for 2 hrs and no change either so concluded in this time frame moisture would have evaporated. I installed the new one and am smoking 4 butts as I type this and new one never clouded or got moisture in it with use so far.

But, it wasn't back in a 250* environment...
Mine was clearly moisture as I could see the beads inside. They very well may be apples & oranges, but mine didn't evaporate until the smoker was fired up again.

I`ll throw it in a convection oven later today at 325 ( conversion for 350 heat) and see what happens. Cooking some food so it would be a good test with moisture and moving air at the same time to see if it goes away. If it does it means a working spare thats a bit off in temp readings. If not I have a 100% working and non clouded new one after 16hrs of smoking pork butts yesterday. It never even clouded on cool down in the rainy weather we had here.

I go by grate and food temps anyways so the dome one was just a nice visual for a quick temp check. I did 4 butts yesterday and had 4 probes running in through my grommet in the side. To tell the truth I don't think I ever looked at the dome one the whole time except after to see if the coals were getting choked out after closing the vents.

Curious. I've only used water during my first cook - which resulted in the clouded thermometer.
How many times have you used water in the pan? Wondering if there's a connection...

First use with small amount of water when doing chicken and ribs...no water ever again as it came off the smoker the next day and Weber sent me the new one. Moisture would have been long gone by now sitting in my house and with the warm and hot places I have put it with forced air around it the following weeks. Weep hole has always been open and unobstructed during this time and the clouding is the same as in the pic on the first page. New one never smoked/clouded on smoking the butts and I had some water in the disposable drip pan I had sitting on top of the clay pot to catch the meat drippings. Probably 2 cups to start and it pretty much steamed off and drippings took over in the pan.
