New to this type of Q'ing just got WSM, have open pitted bbq before, and lots of grilling time on my ranch and 22.5 Weber. I would like to know if the DigiQ II something I need to purchase. A lot of my Q'ing will be over night. Please give me your opinions.
Thanks,
Wayne

Hey, another Wicker! What part of the country are you in, Wayne? There aren't many of us anymore, so I thought I'd say hey.

Back on topic, I do not own an auto temp controller for my WSM, but it's probably next on my list of mods. Try a couple of smokes without a temp controller to see how you like it. I've been fairly successful overall, but I would relish the opportunity of a full night's sleep while Q'ing.

No It's not a must have, but if you do overnight cooks I would suggest you consider purchasing one. With the DigiQ you just set it and forget it. No need to hop up of bed frequently to check the WSM temp. Like a lot of us on this board I would not fire up the WSM without the DigiQ being hooked up.

It's really just a convenience...but it's an awfully nice one. It's really all about peace of mind.

I used my WSM for a full year without and had more than a few successful overnight cooks. But there is really nothing like going to bed and knowing that your pit temps will be exactly the same when you get up.

Besides overnighters, it gives you even more flexibility. I did my last cook during a work day. Prepared the meat the night before and then got up about 30 minutes early. Set up the cooker and the DigiQ, lit up with the minion method, put the meat on and turned on the DigiQ. Never checked it again until I got home from work about 8-9 hours later.

Needless to say, I'm a big fan.

Definitely not needed - but I use mine all the time ;-) Even for shorter cooks.

Yesterday it was nice to crank up the WSM load the ribs, set the Digi II and leave for a few hours to run to the store, get the car washed without any concern about low temps.

Thanks for the input. I think i will do for a while what Larry said an learn to cook without one then get me one an be spoiled like it sounds some of you are with one. hehe

Danny I am from Newberry South Carolina, grew up in Pomaria about 7 miles out of Newberry. PLENTY of Wicker's around here, we settled the area in the late 1700's from Germany and settled in the area called Dutch Fork.

Really do appreciate all the input yall gave me.

Thanks again.
Wayne
