Cutting Wood

I just got a WSM a few months ago and found access to one apple tree that the branch split because of the weight of apples on the tree branch. I also have access to a branch that broke on a crab apple tree last year is does not have any leaves on an is pretty dry it i 3" in diameter.

Would you use the branch on the tree that is a year old? What is the general consensus on dead branches?

On the tree that just broke, what size diameter should I go down to? the ends of the branches get pretty small, should I stop making new pieces when it gets to the size of a dime?

Yes I would unless you see insects in the wood.

Personally. I would go no smaller than the size of a quarter.

BTW, apple is one of my favorite woods so you are very lucky.
