So, wee hours of the morning on the 23rd, (about 0230) we got woken by an owl. Just outside the bedroom window in our large oak tree directly behind the house. That thing was really "hooting" up a storm. Funny thing is we've never seen or heard one here before. Quite a few other birds of prey Red Tail Hawks, Cooper's Hawks, even an occasional Bald Eagle) never an owl. Was really cool hearing it back there.

I live in a wooded area, and if I stopped hearing owls every so often, I would get worried. We also have falcons, red-tailed hawks, and vultures (turkey as well as black). We used to have bird feeders out in the yard, and it was always interesting to see the little birds and squirrels scatter if a shadow passed over the yard. Whether it was from a legitimate threat or from a cloud obscuring the sun momentarily, the reaction to a shadow was always the same - run for cover!. The birds of prey help keep the rodent populations in check in our area,

I thought I heard on the video of someone had left the door open and the owl came in the door

Haha, They were trying to get him to go out the door. If you click on the youtube icon you can read the description. There was an article on the front page of the Metro section of the Washington Post this morning on this too.

Agreed, but I view the vultures as one of nature's "trash collectors". If a squirrel gets run over in our neighborhood, the vultures come and eat off of the carcass until it gets small enough for one of them carry it off. Saves having to get a shovel and bury the thing.

Oh, yeah, same here. They're just really ugly critters. If you're in a really quiet area and they're above you can hear them making a weird trilling sound. One day when I was out hiking with my grandson (he was littler and more gullible) he asked "papa what is that sound?". I pointed to the vultures above and told him they were really happy because they thought he was lunch. :D

Careful, Larry...if they take that personally, you're next on their hit list 🤣

I don't think they actually interact with turkeys
They sure as heck will drop down on turkey carcasses. And if these farmers are anything like the turkey farmers back home, they're just not concerned about losing a couple of birds out of a flock. Vultures aren't that much of a nuisance as I am pretty sure they won't kill birds, but will clean up the carrion. They don't hang around if there's no food.
