Cook box bow fix attempt

@Steve Hoch posted his method for fixing the all too common bow in the front of the old Genesis cook boxes. I promised I would try it out on one my scrap cook boxes and I did that this afternoon. I got it clamped down so the cooking grates were actually clamped in tight. You can see from the photos that it is clearly bowed "IN" with the clamp on. I still have to clamp it slightly right and left of center as Steve recommends. I did put a piece of deck board across the back edge as I don't want that to get pulled in since it was straight to begin with. I apologize for not taking a before photo. But, I literally pulled this out of my scrap pile.

OK after doing the middle, left of center and right of center, I will officially award the TVWBB Tip of the Week to Steve. It now is as straight as it ever will be. Genius.

I did go back and redo my mine the other day with a board on the back like you did, which is how I had done it previously. It looks good to me Bruce and it should stay that way so don't feel bad about passing that box on to someone else.

The problem is that cook box has more issues. I has that bulge on one side just above the cross member and the sides are warped in. That is OK. I have some spares. I do have another one in my queue that has the front bow, but otherwise looks good, so I will doing it again soon and it will save me a cook box.

You might want to try doing some bending and pounding on it to see if you can bend it back into shape. Like you said, nothing to lose if it doesn't work. You saw how easy that cook box bent with not too much effort.

I like this method, a lot. I have only come across one bowed cookbox. I noticed it early thankfully and scrapped it. Had I known this I would have given it a try.

Is the bowed cookbox more common on the Silver B?

I don't know for sure, but I would tend to agree with Steve. I think the B's are a bit more prone. 4 or 5 years ago, I got a bunch of the bowed cook boxes to the point I couldn't finish rehabs due to a shortage.

One of the SS Platinums was the one I used in my test above. The other didn't look to have issues on the sides or the bulge, only the front edge. I will be using your method on that one as well.

The other one I did was a Genesis 1000 box, but I think it is probably more common on the Silver B. It seems the aluminum is a little thinner on those compared to the Genesis 1000.
Probably bean counter input to casting design. If I had one of each I’d weigh them.
When they made the fat frame Golds they clearly modified a x000 mold for their boxes.
