Controller Problem

The Q1400 controller won't turn off (light still on and element red) no matter what setting. I understand that there is the possibility of "resetting the controller" by unplugging it for a while and then re-plugging it back. Appreciate any comments. Thanks !!!

Hmmm, yah, I am pretty sure it should be off, when on the lowest setting.

How old is your grill? It might still be covered under warranty.

I would guess it works similar to an infinite switch on a newer stove element. Maybe the contacts arced and welded together. You can try giving the switch a good smack to see if it'll break it loose.

Pretty sure it would be an SSR (solid state relay, an electronic switch) or triac and I've never been able to whack one of those hard enough to get it working, although it did make me feel better afterwards. :ROFLMAO:

I don't own one so I wouldn't know for sure whether it's a solid state controller or a bimetallic strip, but I'm guessing they went with the primitive bimetallic strip technology as the electric Q's have a warning about not using the temperature controller when it's -25c outside.

Yeah, you're probably right. Whack it! Whack it good!

Alternatively, take it apart and see. I have no idea what it looks like...I have something that looks like an electric skillet controller in my head. On our skillet, you can hear the switch clicking off and on as it cycles.
