Combine Genesis 2000 and Silver B?

So I just got this new to me Genesis Silver B. It has new cast iron grates and came with two propane tanks. I thought it was a good deal for $50. BUT, there’s a hole burnt into the back corner of the firebox. Not sure how safe this is? Can I cover it with a metal plate?

Or, can I swap the Genesis 2000 firebox and manifolds, etc. to the Silver B frame?

I thought I was getting out of a project, but the grills are piling up...!

No, you cant swap manifolds or burners or flavorizer bars. You can swap cooking grates and lids. You cannot swap over the whole cook box from one frame to the other either. i have never seen a cook box rot away that bad. It probably is OK for a while, but I would't recommend using it.

Ah, I measured the boxes and they looked close but I figured I’d ask the wise ones here before I had two grills disassembled!

The damaged area of the box was hard to see since it was kinda hidden from below by the bottom tray and from above by a bunch of caked on grease and rust flakes. Is this damage from a grease fire or some strange corrosion? Either way I didn’t realize that was an issue with these so I wasn’t really looking for it. Buyer beware. At least the propane tanks and new CI grills are good.

Looks like I’ll be buying another silver B and combining that one with this one. Is this how this whole grill hobby starts...?!

Just pressure washed it. The lighter spots are the corroded looking burnt areas. There’s a little more than I thought, with some pinholes and such.

Yes that's how it starts. You need 2 or 3 old grills to make one good old grill. No different than old cars, old bikes, old motorcycles, old anything

I had a small hole in mine and Weber replaced it under warranty just last year. It was lifetime warranty on the firebox. They asked a few questions and I sent them a pic. Worth a try! 🤞🏻

I feel like I got pretty lucky, I picked up my ‘97 genesis for $20, firebox and frame were sound, needed to replace virtually all the innards but, thanks to the folks here I learned a lot with the rehabbing. The Silver B has suffered a Chernobyl syndrome on one end and I paid $80 for that, I was young and full of juice (ignorant of the problems which I learned about after the fact) and, I learned a lot, thanks guys!
Yesterday, a buddy at the John Wayne birthday party looked at my end caps and said,”I think I can easily media blast a couple of sets.” You could have knocked me over with a grill brush! Maybe next week I can get over and do a tear down of his grill and see what’s good and what’s not.
Which leads to a (somewhat) related question. Can I swap frames without too much monkeying around? The Genny he was gifted looks pretty good (Very sound) but, if something goes sideways is it reasonable to swap frame to frame? Both are 13 bar fire boxes so, I can ditch the old (nuclear victim) Silver box and whichever frame is in poor condition. Maybe I can make a smoker carriage using the old frame...the mind boggles!

Of course this pops up after I’ve offered my Genesis 2000 to a friend, and bought the Silver B. Mixing parts from the 2000 to this 1000 would be ideal. Oh well, I’m keeping an eye out for another B. Is the cooking experience that much better with the added depth and bars of the older 1000/2000 box?

So I decided to just use this for the time being until I find one of these with a better firebox for cheap. I made a “patch” for the box so no grease dripping gets out of hand. It’s thin aluminum flashing so it won’t last forever. I then swapped the red lid over, as it’s too classic not to keep. I sprayed some UV restorer on the fiberglass plastic parts and they look a bit better. I used Mcnett UV Tech, which is similar to 303 aerospace protectant but cheaper. Looks good and fits on the deck corner. Looking forward to getting some use out of it!
