Cold weather smoke

I was wondering if any of you guys out there have ever tried putting some insulation around the WSM during really cold temps. I thought I would try an water heater blanket. They are about the same diameter. 2 years ago I fired it up at 10 above. The cold added another hour. Much harder to keep the temps up. Anybody have any other ideas?

search around here for:

guru smoking jacket

water heater

I have a guru jacket and it really does help a lot

another thing, go waterless. the primary function of water in the pan is to keep your temps down ... not what you want when it's cold ... try loose crumpled foil in the pan covered with foil or sand or a clay pot saucer ... you will still have indirect heat but will gain 25% or better more energy from your fuel

other than a wind block, nope, just dealt with it.

One tip Steve...
(and you probably already know this...)
Do not open a cold bottle of beer outside when the temps are below zero.

Lampe, I may sound like a green horn here, but why can't one open a cold bottle of beer when it's cold out? I know I am going to regret this.

I've read (I think here) that someone picked up some high-temp aluminum insulation wrap, similar to the water heater blanket but can handle high temps.

Use a wind block or the south side of the garage myself.

I suppose the first step would be to get the cold beer. And then get the insulated cover. Thankyou guys. Again for the valuable information.

At least I am not the only one wondering why you cant do this.

Dave and Shane, lemme tell ya a little story that happened 0hh... bout 20-25 years ago.
I used to ice fish. A lot.
this particular sunny weekend day, we set out for an afternoon on Potter's Lake not far from here, bout a 25 minute drive (35 if I'm driving).
Anyway, someone else had the responsibilty of bringing the beer. And he did. In a cooler filled with ice. Great if you're in a boat on a 85'F hot sunny day... butt the temps that ice-fishin' day were hoverin' around -7'F. It wasn't too windy butt I'll bet the windchill temps were near 15 below.
Getting back to the beer part of the story... Tom (who brought the beer) grab a few bottles and started to hand them out.
When he gave me one, I told him to dump the ice from the cooler and try to warm the beer. He laughed then opened his brew.

Froze solid.

When you introduce a cold beer to the cold minus zero degree air, it'll freeze almost instantly. Canned beer freezes faster than bottled beer.
So, if you're gonna drink beer outside when the temps are below zero, start with room temperature beer.

Thanks for the warning Jim. I'll remember that this winter when I ... uh ... ice fish? no ... uh ... well, never mind ....
