A friend of mine just came back from a trip
to Thailand.
She said she had the best Steak of her life.
A little charcoal grill was wheeled out to
their table and the chef cooked their steaks
right there at the table.
While the steaks were sizzling away, the chef
would throw little chunks of coconut shell
onto the hot coals.
I asked her what the steak tasted like.
She said "It had a taste like burnt coconut
but it was really, really good".
Anyone tried coconut shell ?

Jim

Haven't tried it, but I love coconut. Do you know if it was the thick outer husk, or the dark brown inner shell that has the white part inside? I'm guessing it's the inner one, because it seems like the outer husk would be nasty and probably unhealthy to burn.

Just this weekend, i was at my local ethnic market, and i saw they were selling "coconut charcoal" I assume its made from the husks..but i dont know. It claims to burn hotter than regular.

Mickey,

She said that it was the inner shell.
I found a web-site that mentiond smoking
with coconut shells.
It's not worth adding a link to it because they had little information.
All they said was to use it sparingly because it's really potent stuff.
